what sort of trek - when to go - where to go - what to take - porters

What sort of trek - independent or organised?

The option you choose will mainly be determined by how confident you are in your own skills. If you are used to organising walks, etc, either on your own or with a couple of friends, don't mind booking flights/hotels, working out an itinery, carrying your own rucksack and have an independent streak, then it is not difficult to set up your own trek. Getting to Kathmandu, finding a hotel and getting up into the hills is quite easy. There is accommodation all the way along the trails, other trekkers going the same way as you and it's almost impossible to get lost. Virtually all you need to know is on this site - if it is not, contact me and I will help you as much as I can.

However, other people prefer to have everything organised for them, and if that is your choice then the numerous walking and outdoor magazines that are available carry advertisements for trekking companies that will be only too pleased to help. If you can get one, a personal recommendation is always best. Some companies' camp, others use lodges/tea houses. Porters carry the bulk; you only carry a day sack, wallet and camera. It's all very well organised and I'm not knocking it. They will have an English speaking guide leading the trek who will do their best to ensure that you have an enjoyable experience. The independent trekker, however, has the advantage of flexibility.

It is definitely cheaper to organise your own trek, but at the end of the day, it is personal choice. Whichever style of trekking you choose, the mountains and the people are great!
