A trek in the Nepal Himalayas is something that you will remember for the rest of your life. You will tell your family, your friends, work colleges and anyone who will listen, all about the sights that you have seen, but what will impress them more than anything else is a photograph album packed with images of this magical kingdom.

If you are a "camera buff" then you will not need my advice. However, if you are like myself, and carry a camera with you on walks etc just in case you spot something interesting do not worry. A modern compact 35mm camera, preferably with a zoom, flash and motor wind will cope with virtually every eventuality. They have become an almost standard item in most peoples travel bag wherever they go. A U.V. filter, especially in the mountains, is essential however.

You will have numerous chances to capture images of the countryside as you trek, as well as chances to photograph the charming Nepalese people that you meet. Most people that you meet will have no objection to being "snapped", especially in Kathmandu, but in the mountains some may be a little shy. They may even request a small fee. Whatever you do, take great care not to invade people's privacy, do not photograph family ceremonies without permission, and be prepared to make a donation if you photograph a religious ceremony. The other piece of advice I would offer is to take plenty of film with you. Film in Kathmandu can be a little more expensive than at home and it may well have been through an airport x-ray machine before reaching Nepal. Twenty rolls of 36 exposure film for a two or three-week trek is not too much. If you cannot wait to see the results of your handiwork, there are plenty of good quality film processing facilities in Kathmandu.
