Maoist rebels declare ceasefire.

Nepal's communist rebels have declared a ceasefire following the recent chaos in the country.

The move comes as a new Government prepares to take control after weeks of bloody protests, which forced the King to reinstate Parliament.

The elusive leader of the Himalayan country's Maoist rebels, Prachanda, said in a statement that his group's fighters would refrain from any assaults on Government targets for three months to give the country a chance for peace.

Nepal's reinstated Parliament is due to reconvene on Friday in the capital Kathmandu. It is expected to elect a new Prime Minister and initiate the process for electing a special assembly that would write a new constitution. The process could limit the role of the monarch or abolish the monarchy altogether.

The recent spate of protests has been organised by a coalition of opposition parties and the communist rebels.
They have been trying to force King Gyanendra to relinquish control over the Government.

Prachanda and interim Prime Minister Girija Prasad Koirala held talks prior to the the decision to offer a ceasefire. Mr Koirala said the conversation helped ease misunderstandings over the situation.
