Foreign Office Minister, Dr Kim Howells has welcomed King Gyanendra of Nepal's announcement on 24 April that he will recall the Nepalese Parliament. The first session of the recalled Parliament will be on 28 April.
'This is a tribute to the Nepalese people’s desire for democracy and peace. We therefore welcome the King's announcement and the reinstatement of Parliament.
'This is the moment for which the political parties have long worked: the return of genuine multi-party democracy and a government with full executive powers. We congratulate G P Koirala on becoming the new Prime Minister and call on the political parties to work constructively together to take forward the political process without delay.
'The Maoists now need to prove their commitment to democracy by giving up violence and by entering into a peace process with the new government, beginning with a ceasefire.
'We want to reiterate the UK's readiness to assist the new government and the people of Nepal in support of peace, democracy and development.
