King Restores Parliament

Updated: 21:12, Monday April 24, 2006

Nepal's embattled King Gyanendra has reinstated the lower house of Parliament. The move was a key demand of pro-democracy protesters who have brought the country to the brink of chaos in recent weeks.

The king announced the measure in a national television and radio address. He also offered solace for those killed in the recent demonstrations.

At least 14 people have been killed and hundreds hurt by police using teargas, rubber bullets and live rounds. "We extend our heartfelt condolences to all those who have lost their lives in the people's movement," the king said.

His speech came one day before what was planned to be the largest protest yet. Some people took to the streets of the capital Kathmandu to celebrate just minutes after the speech.

Parliament's lower house holds the real electoral power in Nepal with the upper house being largely symbolic.
