Nepal protesters shot dead.

Security patrols enforcing a curfew in Kathmandu have shot dead at least three anti-monarchy protesters and seriously injured dozens more, it is reported.
Tens of thousands of pro-democracy campaigners defied a curfew to march on the Nepalese capital, despite orders to shoot them on sight.
Hospital officials say, on top of the deaths, more than 40 people are in a critical condition.

The protest is the latest move in an ongoing protest to force King Gyanendra to restore multi-party democracy.
Tens of thousands of protesters had gathered yards outside the city limits, as they are not covered by the curfew, which had left the city of 1.5 million people deserted.

Forces are on patrol but campaigners defied the orders and headed for the Royal palace. Activist Keshav Joshi said: "If the King has the guts, we challenge him to come out and face us without the curfew. "He is a coward and protected by the curfew. The people are not with him." The gates of Narayanhity Palace, the King's city residence, were closed and an armoured car with a machine gun was on patrol.

At least eight people have been killed and hundreds wounded in police action against demonstrators since protests were launched 15 days ago. Tens of thousands have attended protests every day in Kathmandu, but many more have demonstrated in district towns.

A general strike, part of the campaign, has prevented the movement of goods and people across the impoverished nation.
